Barbara Griffin, R.N. (non-practising), M.Ed., a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, the Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychometrists, and Psychotherapists (OACCPP) and the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation ( ICISF).
Barbara uses a collaborative and strengths-based approach to working with clients. This promotes a strong therapeutic relationship within a compassionate, safe, and respectful working environment. Barbara provides empathetic and compassionate psychotherapy to individuals and families that focus on a range of personal issues which include separation, divorce, trauma, PTSD, personal loss and bereavement, anxiety and depression, child and adolescent development, women’s issues and workplace issues. Theoretical approaches include client-centred and family systems.
She also has 19.5 years of critical care nursing, specifically emergency and trauma, and understands the unique demands and stress faced by First Responders and medical professionals. Barbara’s medical background is useful when working with all clients.
Barbara is a 5-year member of the York Region Critical Incident Stress Management Team as a Mental Health Professional working with First Responders and their families with the goal to prevent PTSD. She also provides crisis interventions to organizations that have experienced a critical/ traumatic event.
Barbara is trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and EMDR Therapy. Barbara also completed the Addictions Certificate program at Laurier.
Barbara currently provides distance counselling by telephone.
