Joanna LaCaprara (She/Her)
I am a Registered Social Worker and Psychotherapist based in Whitby, Ontario, with over 14 years of experience supporting individuals, couples, and families through a variety of mental health challenges. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology from Simon Fraser University in 2007 and a Master of Social Work from the University of Windsor in 2010. My career began facilitating groups for court-mandated programs and progressed to providing therapeutic support to youth and families in accredited children’s mental health agencies. For the past nine years, I have worked within a school board, focusing on student mental health and attendance, while also running a private practice in Durham Region since 2019.
I have extensive experience working with adults, youth, and families dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, suicidality, non-suicidal self-injury, family strain, major life transitions, and grief. Over time, I have developed a focus on supporting first responders and their families, understanding the unique pressures, cumulative stress, and trauma exposure associated with emergency service work. I provide a safe and confidential space to process operational stress, critical incidents, and relationship challenges, while helping families navigate the ripple effects of high-stress careers. My work emphasizes resilience-building, coping strategies, and strengthening connections both at work and at home.
My approach is grounded in empathy, collaboration and client-centered care. I utilize evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed care, tailoring interventions to meet each client’s needs and goals. I am committed to creating authentic therapeutic relationships, helping first responders and their families feel heard, validated, and empowered to navigate challenges and cultivate long-term emotional well-being.
